Francesco Bagnaia took victory in the 2024 Emilia Romagna MotoGP Sprint race at Misano, edging out his title rival Jorge Martin after a thrilling late pass. Bagnaia’s win narrows the championship gap to just four points heading into Sunday’s full-length race.
Starting from pole position with a new lap record, Bagnaia initially lost out to both Martin and Brad Binder at the start. But the reigning world champion quickly regained composure, overtaking Binder by the end of the first lap and setting his sights on Martin. Bagnaia stalked Martin’s rear wheel for much of the race, finally pouncing when Martin ran wide with six laps remaining.
Bagnaia, riding for the Ducati Lenovo team, held off Martin’s challenge to take the win by 0.473 seconds, as Martin couldn’t recover from his mistake. Ducati’s dominance was further cemented by Enea Bastianini, who finished third, 1.034 seconds behind Martin, giving the Italian brand a lockout on the podium.
Marc Marquez, who started from seventh, mounted a strong recovery to battle into fourth place. However, he could not match the pace of the Ducati trio, eventually dropping off and finishing just ahead of MotoGP rookie Pedro Acosta, who impressed with fifth place for Red Bull GASGAS Tech3.
Binder Struggles After Strong Start
Brad Binder, after a promising start that briefly saw him ahead of Bagnaia, fell back to sixth place by the end of the Sprint. The Red Bull KTM rider couldn’t keep up with the front runners, especially after Marc Marquez passed him early on.
Fabio Quartararo Returns to Form
Monster Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo had a much-needed solid performance, finishing seventh. The French rider has struggled this season, but his sprint race showed a glimpse of improvement, albeit still far from podium contention.
Bezzecchi and Morbidelli In the Mix
Marco Bezzecchi finished eighth for VR46 Ducati, followed by Franco Morbidelli, who rounded out the top nine on the Pramac Ducati. Maverick Viñales completed the top ten for Aprilia Factory Racing, with both Aprilia riders unable to find the form necessary to challenge the Ducati dominance.
Honda Woes Continue
Repsol Honda’s struggles persisted, with Joan Mir finishing a disappointing 21st after returning from illness, while Alex Marquez crashed out during the race. The team continues to face challenges in finding competitiveness this season, despite efforts to improve.
Looking Ahead
With Bagnaia’s victory in the Sprint race, the battle for the 2024 MotoGP world championship is heating up. Martin’s lead has been cut to just four points, and Sunday’s full-length Emilia Romagna Grand Prix promises to be a thrilling encounter as Bagnaia aims for his 100th Grand Prix win.
