2024 WorldSBK Race 1 Cremona: Petrucci Takes Maiden Victory After Red Flag Drama

Danilo Petrucci secured his first WorldSBK victory in a chaotic Race 1 at the Cremona Circuit, with the race interrupted by a red flag on lap 15 due to technical issues, including the loss of trackside cameras. The Italian was leading by 2.5 seconds over Nicolo Bulega when the red flag was waved, cementing a triumphant victory for Petrucci and Barni Spark Racing Ducati.

Petrucci’s winning move came on lap five, where he passed Andrea Iannone to take the lead. Iannone, showing impressive form early in the race, was forced to retire after a crash at Turn 7, while Alex Lowes also suffered a similar fate a few laps later from third position.

Bulega, riding for Aruba.it Racing Ducati, kept up his pace but was unable to close the gap to Petrucci, finishing second, 2.225 seconds behind. The fight for the final podium position, however, became the story of the race.

Starting from 13th on the grid, Alvaro Bautista had a challenging start but worked his way through the field. It took him several laps to break into the top ten, but once there, he steadily gained positions. As Honda’s Iker Lecuona began to fade from third place, Bautista made his move, passing Lecuona and charging through Garrett Gerloff, Bradley Ray, Axel Bassani, and Xavi Vierge to claim third place, 6.487 seconds behind Petrucci.

Lecuona, who had taken third place from Yamaha’s Andrea Locatelli just before the red flag, held on for fourth place after a fierce battle. He finished ahead of Bassani in fifth and Vierge in sixth.

Michael van der Mark, representing BMW, was one of the few riders able to put up a strong fight against Bautista. He eventually finished in seventh place, just ahead of Gerloff, with Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Remy Gardner completing the top ten.

Alex Lowes, after his crash, made it back to pit lane but was classified a lap down due to the red flag. Andrea Locatelli, who was running in the top positions before experiencing problems, finished 12th.

Several riders failed to finish the race, including Andrea Iannone, Sam Lowes, Tito Rabat, Niccolo Canepa, and Tarran Mackenzie.

The action at Cremona will continue tomorrow with Race 2, where the grid will look to recover from today’s drama and Petrucci will aim to continue his newfound momentum.
